Company Accounting in Morocco
Accounting for a company in Morocco is not a set of financial statements handed over once the year is closed. Between TVA (value added tax), corporate income tax instalments, CNSS (national social security) filings and payroll, something falls due every month. Our firm takes the whole cycle in hand, with one contact who knows your file and answers you the same day.
What an accounting firm takes on
Bookkeeping is the foundation: recording purchases, sales, bank and cash movements, matching entries, supporting every balance. Done regularly, this is the work that makes all the filings downstream of it possible, and that lets you answer a management question without spending three days rebuilding a financial year.
Then come the filing obligations: TVA returns under whichever regime your company falls into, instalments and the year-end settlement of corporate income tax (IS), the liasse fiscale (annual tax return package) drawn up after the year end, social security returns to the CNSS, and payslips with the corresponding withholdings.
The law requires every commercial company to keep proper accounts in line with the chart of accounts, and to retain its supporting documents for several years. Accounts that are missing, incomplete or unsupported are not a minor administrative lapse: they leave the company unable to prove its expenses, they expose it to a rejection of the accounts in a tax audit, and in practice they close off bank credit and public procurement.
The most common consequences remain mundane, however: penalties on returns filed late, a TVA credit never recovered for want of supporting documents, or a financial year that has to be rebuilt in a hurry because nobody was following it.
The work we handle
The scope is adjusted to the size of your company, but it is always organised around the same blocks.
- Full bookkeeping and substantiation of account balances
- TVA returns and monitoring of the TVA credit
- Corporate income tax instalments and the annual income return
- Preparation of the financial statements and of the liasse fiscale
- Payroll, payslips, CNSS returns and tracking of staff arrivals and departures
- Support during a tax audit or a CNSS inspection
- Day-to-day advice: choice of regime, treatment of a transaction, preparation of a bank file
The calendar of obligations
The precise deadlines depend on your regime, your closing date and your turnover. The rhythm itself never changes.
| Frequency | Obligation | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Every month | TVA return and payment | Companies on the monthly regime |
| Every month | Payroll, payslips and CNSS return | Any company with employees |
| Every quarter | TVA return and payment | Companies on the quarterly regime |
| During the financial year | Corporate income tax instalments on account | Companies subject to IS |
| After the year end | Financial statements, liasse fiscale and income return | All companies |
| As the case requires | Specific returns: withholding taxes, taxe professionnelle (local business tax) | Depending on the activity and the premises occupied |
Fiduciaire, accounting firm, expert-comptable: the differences
The three terms circulate as if they were synonyms, and that is a source of misunderstandings. In Moroccan usage, a fiduciaire or an accounting firm means a practice that keeps its clients' books, prepares their returns and guides them through their routine formalities. That is what the vast majority of small and mid-sized companies need.
The title of expert-comptable, by contrast, is protected: it presupposes registration on the roll of the Ordre des experts-comptables (the professional body), a qualification and a code of professional conduct. Certain engagements are reserved to its members, in particular statutory audit and the commissariat aux comptes (statutory auditor's mandate), along with the certifications that engage their responsibility for the accounts being regular and faithful.
In practical terms, if your company must appoint a statutory auditor, if an investor or a bank requires certified accounts, or if you are preparing a sale, you need a professional registered with the Ordre. For day-to-day bookkeeping, returns and payroll, a properly structured firm is enough. Before you sign, ask who will sign your statements, under what title, and who will be your contact day to day: a serious firm answers plainly and refers you to a registered colleague when the engagement calls for it.
Taking over a file kept by another firm
Changing accountants is an ordinary step, but badly prepared it costs you a financial year. This is how we go about it.
Recovering the records
Your accounting documents belong to you. We draw up the list of what must be handed back: trial balances, general ledgers, journals, accounting files, supporting documents and the returns already filed.
Checking the opening balances
We take the closing trial balance of the last financial year and verify that the balances are supported: bank accounts reconciled, third-party accounts consistent, suspense accounts cleared.
Verifying the returns
We check what was actually filed and paid, so as to identify a missing return, a forgotten TVA credit or an adjustment to be made before it becomes expensive.
Putting things right
Anomalies are dealt with in order of urgency, separating what must be corrected immediately from what can be corrected at the next year end.
Back to the normal rhythm
Once the file is clean, we resume the monthly cycle. The transition period generally lasts a few weeks, depending on the state of the file taken over.
Your accounting in Casablanca, month after month
The way it works is deliberately simple. You send us the month's documents, either uploaded to our shared workspace or handed over in person. We post them, we flag what is missing rather than letting a suspense account grow, then we prepare and file the returns due for the period.
Every month you receive a short update: turnover, provisional result, TVA payable or carried forward, deadlines ahead. That is what allows you to decide on a hire or an investment with your eyes open, and to avoid the unpleasant discovery at the year end.
In a tax audit, we take the file in hand. It begins with a close reading of the notice received and of the years covered, then with the preparation of the documents requested and the reconstruction of supporting evidence. We answer on the technical points in place of the director, we prepare each meeting with you, and we explain what in the proposed adjustments is genuinely open to challenge.
Our clients in Casablanca range from the single-shareholder services company to the industrial SME with around fifty employees, and we handle files in the other cities where we are present, with the same contact from one end of the year to the other.
Frequently asked questions
When should a company hand its accounting to a firm?
As soon as the company is registered. Filing obligations begin in the first month of activity, even with no turnover, and a file kept properly from the outset always costs less than a financial year that has to be rebuilt.
Does a company with no activity still have to keep accounts?
Yes. A registered company remains subject to its accounting and filing obligations for as long as it exists, including while dormant. The returns are then filed as nil returns, but they must be filed.
How do you change accounting firm during the year?
Nothing prevents it. The outgoing firm must hand back your accounting documents, which belong to you. We then take over the trial balance, check the returns already filed and correct whatever needs correcting before the year end.
What is the difference between a fiduciaire and an expert-comptable?
A fiduciaire keeps the books and prepares the returns. An expert-comptable is registered on the roll of the Ordre and can in addition carry out the engagements reserved to that title, in particular statutory audit and the commissariat aux comptes.
What happens in a tax audit?
The audit covers the financial years and the taxes set out in the notice you receive. We gather the corresponding supporting documents, respond to the administration's requests, attend the meetings with you and examine each proposed adjustment before answering it.
Hand us your accounting
Send us your last liasse fiscale, or simply describe your activity and your headcount: we will propose a scope of work and a clear annual budget, with no commitment.
